Scandinavian race / Skandisloppet 1909-2009
The young people who formed Upsala Cykelklubb 1906 had already initially high ambitions. With legend Gösta Wåhlander as chairman, the Board decided at an extraordinary meeting in spring 1909 that a so-called Scandinavian race would be held July 11, 1909 (UCK protocoll March 3 1909). The intention was to invite cyclists from all over Scandinavia to participate.
The start took place infront of a numerous audience July 11 at 7 am at the yard of the artillery. Start fee was SEK 3 (equivalent to half the daily earnings of a manual). The 17 riders started with 5 min interval of the control measured 19 miles. The victory went to Alex Ekström SK Iter with the time 6.44.55, before three club mates.
1919, the last war year, there was a severe shortage of bike rings. Many elite racers saw themselves obliged to refrain from "Skandisloppet". Sigge Lundberg, who long led the race had the misfortune to be stopped by an opened bridge (Flottsundsbron). He came over in a rowboat, but the misfortune cost him his victory, which again went to Malm. His time was 7.22.29, a scarce minute before Lundberg.
1920 was the race officially named Skandisloppet. The three great athletes Harry Sten Kvist, UNI (future Olympic champion), AW Persson and Sigge Lundberg, moved up one another at Skärfälten (right outside Uppsala) despite mandatory three-minute intervals. Sten Kvist and Lundberg happened to collide at Flottsundsbron. Sten Kvist managed to come first in the goal - on a borrowed bike for ladies. His time, 6.03.07, was a new record by 30 seconds. A.W. Persson, KLA, came second, half minute after Sten Kvist. Algot Persson won In Class II with the time 6.16.29.
In order to prevent so-called friend driving or driving companies that have become increasingly common in tempo races a 30-meter rule was introduced and the start gap was extended to 5 minutes. These new rules seemed to be worthless in 1925 Skandislopp. Example: Orsa Bohlin awaited Sköld, both Hermes Hauliers, Malm and Holmfrid "Storvik" Erikson on the mark Fram buddy drove. Crescent rider Olle Svensson awaited brand colleague Lundberger who started an hour later. But after Svensson drew Lundberger to Flottsund he broke the contest. Lundberger won thanks to the cooperation on the new record, 5.53.11, four minutes before Malm. The C-class, highlighted a few promising Uppsala adolescents: Nils Velin (1st) and Folke Nilsson (4:th) both IF Thor.
A couple of innovations was introduced in the Skandisloppet when it celebrated its 30th anniversary in 1938. The launch took place on the AUS yard and the target was located in Rosendal school. For the first time, a group start, was tested which had the result that 11 riders crossed the finished line at the same time. Of the two foreign participants, Frode Sörensen, Denmark, and Olgert Russetsky, Finland, Sörensen been the more active and willing to be in front, but had bad luck with a puncture and finished in 16:th place. In the final sprint Ingvar Eriksson was the fastest and took his second victory in Skandis on 4.35.01 one tenth of a second before the club colleague Nils Andersson. Harald "Halle" Jansson, Fyrishov, won in the C-class with the time 1.53.34, 3 half a minute.
It can be added that the Velociped League contest programs disadvantaged the UCK organizers when they located a big international race just two days before the Skandisloppet.
1943, the Skandisloppet was run for the 35th time with a new challenge prize, Skandispokalen, set by Knut Östman & Co. For the first time, it was a B-grade, Gunnar Jansson, Meteor, who had the best time, 6.34.49, while Halle Janemar in A-class, where only five racers started, got 4.35.18.
According to UNT's summaries (1975 -58) the 50th Skandisloppet 1958 was success emphasized. The strong start field turned out to have a large number of good riders with no signs of buddy driving. After several successful secession was finally five in the lead. Ove Adamsson, Kumla, could despite bad luck with an empty forward ring bring in the advantage that the other acquired before Flottsundsbron. After an intense sprint history Adamson won at the time 3.56.08, just a tenth of a second before Rune Nilsson CK Wano. Göte Sundell was best UCK rider at a seventh place (3.55.45).
1963 Skandislopp was a great success for the organization UCK and the Bicycle Federation. "It was a good bicylerace", was the Federal President Folke Svenssons statement. In the main class Ove Adamson won his second straight victory and the Class B was won by Gösta Rödén with Bengt Jansson in second place. Both from UCK. The field was scattered already on the second lap, and Paul Munther, UCK, and Jupp Ripfel, Djurgårdens IF led after six laps, but it was 6 riders in the lead just a few kilometers before the goal. I the finish Ove Adamson was the strongest and won at the time 3.08.00, 4.5 seconds before Ripfel. This was followed by Stig Blom, Huddinge CK, and Paul Munther, UCK.
It was a B-Class rider who won Skandisloppet 1972, the only 18 year old Mats Mikiver, CK Antilopen, who won at the time 4.14.43, three seconds before a clump A -Class riders of 5, in which Lars Gustafsson, Brahelund, won the sprint battle at the time 4.14.46.
This was the first time the race contained 4 classes for ladies. Marja-Leena Huhtiniemi won at the time 1.32.18 in the class for ladies senoirs (54.8 kilometers) with Elisabet Höglund 1.33.05 in second place.
Anniversary Edition of Skandisloppet (1978), the 70th race in the series, a record ofthe 510 cyclists from 67 associations were notified. All of the Swedish elite was there because Skandisloppet also was a national test. The winner was a surprise, namely the 20-year-old Örebro cyclist Thomas Eriksson, in a tough sprint battle, he managed to defeat the 11 competitors, who have gone off at an early stage. Winning time was 3.53.15, the nearest one was Rude Scheler, one tenth of a second after Eriksson, then followed 10 at the same time. Krister Karlsson was the best rider from UCK on a 8th place.
In 1982 it was finally time for a Uppsala cyclist to triumph in Skandisloppet. But it was none of the favorites who won, but the 20-year-old Juha Narkiniemi, who this season competed for the UCK, instead of Fagersta. His lucrative tactic was to ride as hesitant as long as possible. Juha won at the time 4.12.00 with 30 seconds to the nearest man, Anders Johansson, Tranemo IF. The other UCK riders ended at 12:th place (Peter Jansson 4.03.03) and 22nd place (Thomas Rask 4.13.20). UCK-cyclists won in both P 13-14 and P 15-16.
During Skandisloppet 1993 it looked like the UCK rider Anders Wickholm could competing about the victory close to the finish. But Klas Johansson, CK Ceres, and Michael Gustafsson left the others only two kilometers before the goal. Johansson was the fastest sprint finish and won at the time 4.40.46, 16 seconds before Gustafsson and Per Moberg.
In the 90 th edition of Skandisloppet, 1998, it became a Polish victory by Miarcin Sapin. He managed to squeeze past the others in the leading group who were in leadership of the three finishing laps (3 times 4.7 kilometers). Sapins victory time on the 153 km long track was 3.26.43. Nearest followed Jochen Semmes, Austria, Dimitri Gainitidinov, Russia, and Stefan Andersson, Motala AIF. Even 5th, 6th and 7th places went to foreign riders. The best Swede was Magnus Ljungblad on 8th place, same time as the winner. Ladies' 86 km, which also was part of the trials for the national team, was won by Susanne Ljungskog.
In the 2003 Skandislopp an Uppsala rider could finally win. It was when MB-specialist Fredrik Ericsson won. Fredrik Ericsson and Daniel Eriksson had a lead of nearly one minute, when they went out on the 3 last laps (3 laps á 6 km), and they managed to keep away until the finish. Frederick won the duel against Daniel with seven seconds margin, and the time was 4.31.58. Jan Mattsson was four, two minutes after the winner.
An unusual accident occured in the 2006 race of Skandisloppet. The accident occurred at Uppsala Näs, where a car was parked at the side. Nine cyclists fell to the ground and was taken to University Hospital in Uppsala, where it was found that none had any serious injury. No reason to cancel the contest could be found, but the race was ordered a restart for the remaining participants. Lukas Persson won for the third year in a row who won with the time 5.00.09 which was ten seconds ahead of Toni Marikainen. Jan Mattsson was came in third place.
It looked like that Jan Mattsson would reach an awaited victory in 2007. Not less than 27 racers were left until the final lap, where Team Cykelcity with five men drove for the favorite Mattias Westling. Jan Mattsson, who alone fought against them, managed to hang until the finish, where he was beaten by only a few centimeters margin by Westling. The winning time for Westling was 4.47.00. All the other 18 riders recieved the same time.
